Job Description

In-School Suspension (ISS) Teacher Assistant

The In-School Suspension (ISS) Teacher Aide provides academic and behavioral support to students who have been temporarily removed from the classroom due to disciplinary infractions. Working collaboratively with the Assistant Principal, classroom teachers, counselors, and support staff, the ISS Teacher Aide helps ensure students remain engaged in meaningful academic work while serving their disciplinary assignment.

The successful candidate will assist students with completing coursework, reinforce instruction provided by classroom teachers, and promote a structured, supportive learning environment that encourages accountability and continued academic progress. The ISS Teacher Aide will coordinate with departmental teachers to obtain assignments, monitor student work completion, and communicate student progress as needed. In addition to supporting students with their regular coursework, the ISS Teacher Aide will facilitate and assist students in completing MTSS-based accountability lessons designed to promote reflection, skill development, and positive behavioral growth.

Candidates should possess knowledge of child and adolescent development, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining high behavioral expectations. Familiarity with the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework and strategies for supporting students with academic and behavioral needs is preferred.

Examples of Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support students assigned to In-School Suspension.
  • Reinforce lessons and assignments provided by classroom teachers.
  • Assist students with academic tasks and monitor completion of coursework.
  • Facilitate and support student completion of MTSS-based accountability lessons focused on reflection, decision-making, self-regulation, and behavioral growth.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Principal and teachers to coordinate instruction and student support.
  • Maintain a structured learning environment that promotes appropriate behavior, accountability, and student engagement.
  • Monitor student engagement and communicate concerns, progress, and successes to appropriate staff members.
  • Support the implementation of behavioral and academic interventions consistent with the MTSS framework.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records as well as documentation regarding behavior, lesson completion, and academic progress as needed.
  • Foster positive relationships with students while encouraging responsible decision-making and successful reintegration into the classroom environment.
