Must be a current competitive Senior Payroll Clerk or one of the top three eligibles on a valid Erie County Civil Service list or willing to accept a provisional appointment and be one of the top three eligible on the next established Erie County Civil Service list.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of office experience, three (3) years of which involved maintaining payroll records and reports.

Good knowledge of forms, procedures and terminology involved in the maintenance and checking of employee payrolls;

Typical Work Activities
Assists in the supervision of the payroll office, reviewing work of subordinates for accuracy, timeliness and conformance to procedure;
Supervises and performs the following activities: Verifies and approved personnel appointment or change authorizations, ensuring information is correct;
Check time and attendance forms for accuracy and completeness, including such items as hours worked, expiration of appointments and leaves without pay, payments for accumulated benefits (vacation) in final paycheck and other information relative to employee payroll and appointment status;
Maintains a variety of records and files related to employee appointments and salary histories;
Conducts certification of payroll to ensure accuracy of payroll data;
Instructs and informs county payroll clerks on proper appointment procedures and payroll;
Assists Personnel Office staff regarding payroll and employment matters.
