Director of Secondary Education (Anticipated)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for managing the secondary curriculum and instruction program under the guidance of the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and Student Services.  Acts as the District’s secondary curriculum and instruction liaison with the school community.  Supervises the operation of secondary schools throughout the district. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:  The work involves:

  • Working closely with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction to ensure a comprehensive, vertically aligned, well-articulated curriculum program aligned with New York State laws and regulations, district goals, and New York State standards.
  • Providing leadership that promotes the ongoing development and success of the District’s secondary instructional program
  • Partnering with school principals in the development, implementation and progress monitoring of the secondary schools Instructional Improvement Plans (IIPs), instructional programs and assessments
  •   Working directly with Secondary Principals

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.         Must possess a valid NYS School District Administrator certificate (SDA) or School District Leader certificate (SDL).

2.         Minimum ten years of successful experience in teaching, administration and supervision preferred.

3.         Knowledge of secondary curriculum, instruction and NYS standards.

4.         Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and community members.

5.         Successful administrative leadership experience.

6.         Other qualifications as designated by the Superintendent of Schools.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. In concert with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction and the Director of Elementary Education as well as with the Director of Technology, Director of Athletics, and Chief Information Officer/District Data Coordinator as appropriate, plans and implements a district-wide program of curriculum review and development for the secondary grades.
  2. Encourages experimentation, visitations, scrutiny of objectives, and enrichment of curricula and teaching methods by secondary instructional staff.
  3. Keeps informed about current trends and practices in the various subject matter fields and laws/regulations/mandates, disseminating professional information and materials to secondary school staff.
  4. Facilitates all secondary district curriculum meetings, i.e. vertical alignment, data analysis, gap analysis, curriculum map changes, and communication to departments/grade levels. Serves as the resource person for or leader of curriculum workshops.
  5. Conducts analysis of instructional programs and materials and provides leadership to ensure that courses are designed with appropriate correlation to State learning standards/shifts.
  6. With appropriate input, assists in the development of Superintendent Conference Days and District administrative/leadership sessions.
  7. Confers with professional staff regularly to discuss issues of common interest and establish priorities in the curricular areas.
  8. Provides staff development in areas trained or areas of expertise.  
  9. Schedules and directs professional development training for secondary school staff.
  10. Responsible for the development and oversight of all SED required district and secondary school improvement plans.
  11. Assists the Assistant Superintendent in scheduling and setting the agendas for meetings with secondary principals, secondary standards leaders, and other committees impacting secondary school curriculum and instruction.
  12. Assists in the recruitment, screening, hiring and assigning of secondary school instructional personnel.
  13. Prepares and administers the secondary education curriculum budget, and coordinates and maintains such record-keeping as is necessary.
  14. Responsible for the process of textbook selection, facilitation of board approval and textbook ordering in conjunction with building administration.
  15. With the school leaders, screens, evaluates and recommends substitute teachers for secondary school programs.
  16. If requested, attends Board of Education meetings and provides leadership in developing presentations regarding secondary curriculum programs.
  17. Assumes responsibility for the review, evaluation and presentation of results of secondary testing programs in cooperation with the Chief Information Officer/District Data Coordinator, the Director of Technology Services and the Director of Elementary Education, consistent with NYS School Report card.
  18. Facilitates NYS Assessment scoring for the Secondary grades (ELA, Math, Science, Regents, etc.).
  19. Supervises secondary AIS and RTI programs. Monitors the efficacy of instructional interventions that support continuous and measurable improvements in student achievement.
  20. The Director of Elementary Education supervises English as a New Language program (ENL).
  21. Works with the Director of Elementary Education to facilitate an orientation program for newly hired teachers. 
  22. Responsible for the development and oversight of grant programs and funding as directed by the Superintendent (examples:  Perkins, Title, School Improvement grants, etc.)
  23. Maintains associations with social, professional, civic volunteers and other community agencies and groups with an interest in our schools.
  24. Promotes the District’s mission, philosophy, and vision. Builds internal/external partnerships that support district goals and enhance student learning. 
  25. Complies with federal/state policies/procedures for education.
  26. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent.
