PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains all district flowerbeds and shrubs in a neat and presentable manner; this will include weeding, planting and bed preparation.  All plants will be maintained in a healthy condition conducive to growth.
  2. Maintains all district trees in a neat and presentable manner.  All trees will be maintained in a healthy condition conducive to growth.
  3. Completes “finish” grass trimming at all seven district locations once a week from April 15 through November 1.  “Finish” work includes but is not limited to, string trimmings sidewalk edges and around flowerbeds, trees, and playground equipment.
  4. Assists with raking and collection of leaves; cleaning gutters and catch basins; policing grounds and parking lots for debris, damage, etc.
  5. Identifies, selects and applies pesticides as required to maintain turf, flower beds, trees and other ornamental vegetation in a healthy condition.
  6. Operates, maintains, and repairs typical grounds equipment.
  7. Maintains all district athletic fields in safe condition and a neat and presentable manner.  Activities to complete this include all aspects of field maintenance.
  8. Identifies areas on athletic fields where deficiencies appear and reports such deficiencies to the Grounds Crew Chief.
  9. Completes layout and marking of all athletic fields including application of “athletic” marking paints and “dry” marking materials.
  10. Selects and operates appropriate grounds equipment to maintain athletic field turfs/surfaces per identified schedule.
  11. Repairs concrete and black top surfaces, including removal and installation.
  12. Assists in snow removal and distribution of sand, salt, or grit, maintaining all roadways in a clean and safe condition.
  13. Lifts, moves, transports heavy items as required.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Cleans tables and desks in classrooms and lavatories and removes graffiti accordingly;
  2. Dusts and wipes blackboards and walls;
  3. Sweep floors in classroom, mops floors and lavatories;
  4. Cleans and wipes glass in showcases, telephone booths, etc.
  5. Closes windows and draws shade one-half way;
  6. Cleans and sanitizes fountains, sinks, etc.
  7. Cleans staircases and stairs assigned;
  8. Removes marks on walls, tiles, lockers, lavatory stalls, etc.
  9. Cleans and wipes classroom and hall windows as appropriate;
  10. Cleans fixtures where appropriate;
  11. Cleans desks daily;
  12. Services toilet tissues and hand towels;
  13. Cleans administration and staff offices;
  14. Vacuum offices with carpeting;
  15. Maintains and cleans administrative restroom facilities;

Second shift,

Must be a current competitive Custodian or one of the top three eligible on a valid Erie County Civil Service list r be filling to accept a provisional appointment and be one of the top three eligible on the next established Erie County list for Custodian. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.   Performs a variety of cleaning and care tasks including mopping floors, washing walls, ceilings and windows, dusting woodwork and furniture, stripping and waxing floors, vacuuming and shampooing carpets, collecting and disposing of rubbish.       

2.   Performs recurrent and routine semi-skilled maintenance and repair work, such as fixing or replacing broken shelving, hinges, locks, window panes and sash cord, unplugging toilets, traps and sinks, replacing faucet washers, fuses, light bulbs, light ballasts, painting furniture and fixtures.

3.   Maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming shrubbery, raking leaves, shoveling snow.

4.   Operates the building’s heating system and performs routine maintenance on heating and hot water equipment. Examples include: replacing filters and pumps, periodically cleaning equipment and checking fire boxes to insure efficient operation, replacing or adjusting thermostats and points.

5.   Replenishes lavatory, cleaning and supplies.

6.   Reports damages or needed maintenance repair requiring a higher level repair capability.

7.   Occasionally serves as a watchperson.

8.   Sets up equipment and seating facilities for meetings and demonstrations.

9.   Assigns tasks and assists in training members of the custodial staff.

10. Makes periodic inspections of maintenance activities to see that they are being performed according to regulations.

11. Monitors time records for all custodial employees in the school and certifies them for salary payments.

12. Strives constantly to promote safety, health and welfare of students and employees.

13. Does related work as needed.

Job Description

 

QUALIFICATIONS:1.  Must have passed the competitive civil service examination for Custodian and be one of the top three eligibles on a valid civil service list.

                                    2.   Must have good knowledge of building cleaning practices, and ability to use various cleaning equipment and supplies.

                                    3.   Must have knowledge of the operation and maintenance of boiler equipment.

                                    4.   Must have the ability to make semi-skilled plumbing, heating, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs.

                                    5.   Must have the ability to operate plumbing, heating, electrical and mechanical systems following established procedures.

                                    6.   Must have the ability to understand oral and written directions.

                                    7.   Must have the ability to plan and supervise the work of custodial personnel.

                                    8.   Must have the ability to set up and climb ladders or scaffolds.

 

REPORTS TO:         Building Administrator or appropriate Administrator/Supervisor

 

SUPERVISES:          Laborers, Cleaners, Substitutes, student employees
